FAQ – Allgemeine Informationen

Which functions does my Student ID Card have? Hide

Where do I get my Student ID Card?Hide

The student ID card is issued by the Student Administration Office after enrolment. A photo is required to create the chip card. The first issue of the card is free of charge. Please check that the printed data is correct. Please report any errors to the Student Administration Office immediately.

Please remember to revalidate your student ID card at a validation station each semester after renewal of enrolment. The new semester will be printed on the card there.

Where can I validate my Student ID Card?Hide

Validation is necessary after enrolment and every semester after renewal of enrolment. The dates of the current semester will be printed on the card. In the validation process, it is important to ensure that the card is inserted into the slit of the validation printer in the way shown on the display. It is also important not to remove the card from the machine by force, before completion of the process.

Locations of Validation stations:

  • In the Central Administration building (ZUV): One station to the right of the student office and a second station in the same corridor, further to the right of the copy machine
  • In the foyer of the University Library
  • Campus Kulmbach: The "Alte Spinnerei" building, 2nd floor, foyer (near the library)

Please note: After validating your Student ID Card at the validation machine, please make sure to validate your SWO wallet at the top-up station at the mensa foyer. In order to do so, it is sufficient to place the card on the top-up machine for 4-5 seconds.

How can I pay with my Student ID Card?Hide

The wallets are functioning independently from each other, which means the credit cannot be moved from one wallet to the other.

The Student ID Card contains two electronic wallets:

  • Bar vendig machines in the foyer of the Mensa

How should I store my Student ID Card? Hide

The chip card should be carefully looked after, so that neither the external, visible details nor the technical functions of the microchip are damaged.

Avoid the following:

  • Bending the Student ID Card
  • Any permanent curvature
  • washing or contact with other liquids
  • High temperatures
  • Heavy soiling

In general, it is recommended you store your Card in a hard card protector. You can obtain these free of charge at any time from the Student Administration Office or the University Library.

If the card becomes unbreakable due to improper handling, you will have to pay €20.00 (in cash) for a new card.

What should I do if I have lost my Student ID Card?Hide

If a Student ID Card is lost, blocking (and unblocking) should be requested immediately by e-mail chipkarte@uni-bayreuth.de.

From the time of the card’s blocking (as a rule, one working day after reporting it lost), the electronic wallet can no longer be accessed either.

If you have lost your student ID card on campus and it is found, we will notify you via your student e-mail address. ID cards left on the cafeteria tray will also be forwarded to us by internal post within a week.

If you do not receive a message from us, you can apply for a new student ID card from us. You can visit us in person during our opening hours. Please bring your identity card/passport, the fee of 20.00 € (in cash) and a new passport photo if you wish. Your student ID will then be reissued on site and you can take it with you immediately.

What should I do if I have found a Campus Card?Hide

Found student ID cards should be handed in to the Student Administration Office as quickly as possible. Found employee ID cards can be handed in at the IT Service Centre.

FAQ – Security

Is my data protected?Hide

The Campus-Card and its contents, as well as the data arising during card use, are subject to the provisions of the Bavarian Data Protection Act. In particular, no personal usage profiles may be generated. This is not possible, anyway, because in making use of the functions of the Card, no personal data is stored, but only the Card’s number. Data is deleted within the set periods. As a chip card owner, your contact regarding questions of data protection is the data protection officer (DSB) of the University of Bayreuth.

What personal data is stored on the MIFARE chip? Hide

There is no personal data stored on the chip card. On the basis of one code digit, it is only possible to distinguish the card tape (e.g. student ID card, staff ID card or cost centre card). On personalized Cards, the name is only printed onto the Card, but not stored on the chip itself. The chip contains 26 numerical data fields containing inter alia the chip series number, and the beginning and end of the Card’s period of validity.

Is there a possibility of Card misuse?Hide

The risk of misuse of the UBT-Campus-Card is extremely low. For one thing, there is a picture of the owner on the Card, and for another, because of its security technology (AES encryption), the card cannot be duplicated. Even in cases of loss or theft, the Card can only be misused until an application to block the Card is submitted and this has been carried out. It is therefore extremely important to take good care of your Card, and in case of loss or theft to give immediate notification via the web or by E-mail. Heeding these provisos means the risk of misuse is relatively low.

What improvements have been made in comparison to the MIFARE-classic chip, which was hacked shortly before the planned introduction? Hide

After the University Governing Board unanimously resolved not to introduce the encrypted card MIFARE-classic, it was decided that a card with a symmetrical cryptosystem in AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) technology would be used. This system is internationally recognized and certified by NIST. The University settled on implementing the Mifare DESfire8 card, currently boasting the best security standard, especially in the interest of students and staff of the University.

Can a third party gain access to my stored data? Hide

No. Each data field - with the exception of the card serial number - is secured for read and write operations by a secret key, and the data transfer from and to the card reader takes place in encrypted form. Furthermore, a suitable card reader would have to come within 10 cm of the Card, depending on the antenna geometry.
